In this picture, seven-year-old Robbie and I were playing with play-doh during our 15-minute free time in the Berea Reads summer Program, 2008. It is obvious to see that each of us were actively engaged with our activity. This hands-on involvement allowed Robbie to feel creative and capable. Now I definitely reflect that he was a serious and responsible kid, but his reading process was differently slow. But he did have a wonderful reflection on what he just read whenever he felt somehow connected with the stories he was reading. And these books did speeded up his reading, and he was confident with his comprehension skill. So working with Robbie helped me have a deeper understanding of kids' better learning once they are engaged with what is of interest to them.
